My Why: The Heart Behind the First Responder Collab
Last Fire before I retired with the Burtonsville Bandidos Company 15A
For over 20 years, I proudly served as a firefighter, rising through the ranks to become a captain. Those two decades were filled with challenges, triumphs, camaraderie, and an unwavering sense of purpose. The fire service was more than just a career for me—it was a calling, a family, and a way of life.
When I retired in 2020, I thought I was ready to embrace the next chapter. But the transition wasn’t as seamless as I had imagined. Like many first responders, I struggled with losing my sense of purpose. The firehouse—with its unique blend of brotherhood and shared mission—left a void that was hard to fill. I missed the camaraderie, the trust, and the unspoken understanding that only those who have walked the same path can share.
A medical emergency in 2017 solidified my decision to retire after a 20-year career. I had already been contemplating the idea of retiring, but this event made it clear. Initially, I thought I would shift my focus entirely to my real estate career, building a team to recreate the camaraderie I experienced in the fire service. However, I quickly realized that the business world operates very differently from the fire department, and that was frustrating.
A turning point came a few months ago when I attended a Behavioral Health Awareness class through the IAFF. That experience opened my eyes to how deeply my years of service had affected me. I reflected on my fellow brothers and sisters and the toll this job takes on all of us. That’s when I knew I needed to create a community to support us.
Letting go of the fire service was incredibly difficult, but it also helped me see that a different calling awaited me. Though it took years to fully process, I now understand that this journey has led me to something even more fulfilling—a way to give back to the brotherhood that never left me.
How the Collab Came to Life
The First Responder Collab was born out of a deep desire to give back to the community that shaped me. I wanted to create something meaningful—a platform that could serve as a lifeline for first responders, both active and retired, across all professions: firefighters, police officers, nurses, EMTs, and beyond.
The vision was simple but ambitious: to build a one-stop resource hub where first responders could find the tools, support, and connections they need to thrive. I envisioned a trusted space where first responders could connect, collaborate, and share experiences, while also having access to reliable resources vetted by someone who truly understands their world.
My Journey as a Realtor—And Back to My Roots
I’ve been a realtor since 2005, closing deals while still working in the fire department. Initially, real estate was more of a part-time endeavor. It wasn’t until 2017, after a medical emergency, that I started taking it on as a full-time commitment, knowing that retirement was approaching in 2020.
During this transition, I collaborated with fellow firefighters who were contractors, inspectors, and other service providers, creating a network of referrals within our community. However, after leaving the fire department, I found that the business world was different from the fire department, and I missed working with my first responder family.
Emotionally, I had distanced myself from the fire service to avoid the pain of separation. But after four and a half years, an unexpected event brought me back into the fold—a colleague passed away from a medical emergency at a house fire. This tragedy reminded me that the brotherhood had never left me; I had simply pushed it away.
Now, I embrace this renewed sense of belonging and purpose. I realized that my passion wasn’t just in real estate but in serving my first responder family. I want to provide resources that cover all aspects of life for first responders, helping them navigate their journeys as I did mine. Building this platform and vetting resources is my way of giving back, ensuring that my brothers and sisters have the support they need.
Being a knowledgeable realtor with a small, dedicated team, I am committed to understanding and meeting the unique needs of the first responder community. It’s not just about closing deals; it’s about creating a supportive environment where first responders can find the help they need, whether they’re firefighters, police officers, nurses, or EMTs.
Building a Collaborative Community
The essence of the First Responder Collab is to create a network where first responders can find businesses and services that are not only willing but eager to work with our community. A key focus is on discovering and promoting first responder-owned businesses, encouraging collaboration, and providing mutual support. This includes offering discounts or verified services that have proven to be beneficial for our first responders.
Referrals will play a significant role in building this collaborative community. As the initiative grows, we envision organizing events where people can connect in person. Meanwhile, our online efforts will center around our website, Facebook, and Instagram, creating a vibrant space for collaboration, referrals, and community building.
What Drives Us
The Collab is built on three core principles:
Community: First responders share a unique bond, forged through shared experiences and mutual respect. The Collab aims to nurture that bond by fostering a sense of belonging and connection, even beyond the firehouse or precinct.
Support: Whether it’s career transitions, financial planning, or mental wellness, we’re here to help first responders navigate challenges with trusted resources and guidance.
Collaboration: We’re not just building a platform; we’re creating partnerships. The Collab works closely with first responder-owned businesses, organizations, and experts to provide valuable opportunities and services. Fun fact: most first responders have side hustles or secondary careers. Supporting these businesses is another key function of the Collab—helping them grow by providing referrals and exposure to our community. By lifting each other up, we create a ripple effect that benefits the entire community.
Finding Purpose Again
Starting the First Responder Collab has given me a renewed sense of purpose. It’s my way of staying connected to the community I love and honoring the sacrifices made by first responders every day. One of my very own fire department brothers recently passed away at a house fire from a medical emergency; his loss hit me hard. It reminded me of how much support our first responders truly require and reaffirmed that this is my calling now—my purpose. This platform is not just about providing resources; it’s about giving back, fostering resilience, and ensuring that no first responder ever feels like they’re navigating life’s challenges alone.
I don’t know exactly where this journey will take me, but I know it has the power to help so many. Though I’m starting in the DMV area, I envision the Collab expanding far beyond, creating a nationwide impact and fostering a sense of connection and support for first responders everywhere. My hope is that this initiative inspires others and brings our community closer together.
To all the first responders out there: this is for you. Whether you’re just starting your career, navigating retirement, or anywhere in between, the First Responder Collab is here to support you every step of the way. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected community—one that truly thrives.
